Report:

We opened to the northern end.  Our opening term was very good.  Recruit Thomas Motlop had the first effective kick in the game and continued to gather possessions all day.  Adam Rumbelow set the scene with a damaging exhibition off the half back line, repelling Westminster OS, and putting us into attack, with precise disposal.  Add Russell Ware getting first touch in ruck and Brad Horsell winning out of centre, we had the recipe for good football.  Ben Itzkovich was prominent.  When the ball did venture into the Westminster OS forwards, our pressure through Mark Baryczka, Tyson Jacquier and Shaun Jacobsen, was first rate.  Greg Kells was running out of defence - always a good sign.  We had a lot of good players with Robbie Brauer gathering on his wing, Ryan Medhurst on the other and Darren Ueding contributing, it was a quarter in which we stamped our authority on the game.

Within 30 seconds of the second quarter opening Westminster OS ran the ball out of centre and had registered a major.  Some spirited defence by our backlines but Westminster OS knew they had to get back in the game in this quarter.  Their work rate was very good and it started to look a bit bleak.  A couple more scores were registered before Brad Horsell marked and with a penetrating straight kick got us going.  Cohen Mattner followed shortly later and we were again the dominant team.  Shaun Jacobsen was prominent with a dash out of defence, and a goal to Thomas Motlop gave us a good return for the quarter.  Joel Pettersson, off the bench after a game in the B's, took a grab in the pack - but alas his kick was astray.  However it was a good first half with our lead being a couple of goals.

The third quarter was nearly our undoing.  The ball was constantly in Westminster OS forward area.  The play had plenty of pressure, but against the run of play for the entire game, where the scoring had mainly been at the northern end, Westminster OS registered five goals.  It was an avalanche against what breeze there was.  A timely goal from well out to Darren Ueding kept us in touch, but Westminster OS had established control and were two goals up at three quarter time.

We had it all before us in the final quarter.  We were against the breeze, we had to outscore a very good opposition, and our season was on the line.  Pressure - a lot of pressure.  This was the quarter we had to respond.

A couple of positional changes with Brett Gooley going to their tall forward and Shawn Anderson to full forward (he had been at centre half forward), with Cohen Mattner and Darren Ueding hovering around the spot left by Shawn and the quarter was underway.  A dash by Ryan Medhurst and pass to Anderson had our first on the board.  Then Westminster OS were into attack and we were desperate.  Adam Rumbelow's spoil set the scene again and the ball was back into our attack.  Scott Hadnum gathered and with a spectacular back turn passed to Anderson (who marked/free kick) and slotted another.  Again we drove forward and a handball by Dav Ellis saw Motlop register another full pointer.  Westminster OS replied and the game was in the balance.  A forward thrust saw Scott Jacobsen gather on the boundary well out and with a running kick split the centre.  The Bulldog Supporters Group went wild.  When Motlop goaled again the game was in our keeping - or was it?  Westminster OS goaled and the result was still in doubt.  Scott Jacobsen stood up again and passed to Anderson who registered his third for the quarter, and settled matters our way.

A very good win against a formidable opponent on their patch.  Robbie Brauer, Greg Kells (let off the lead) and Ryan Medhurst were all conspicuous with their run and desperation.  Our last quarter had been one of run and pressure and backing up.

Best:  1.  Adam Rumbelow dominated the game.  Off the half back line marked and repelled and did the hard things in the second half to keep the pressure such that we came out with the win.

2.  Russell Ware won the rucks and dominated in the air.  Particularly when needed in the last quarter when he went up a gear and stopped many opposition forward thrusts.

3.  Brad Horsell in the centre won the square.  Horsell in full flight is a sight worth seeing.  And he was in full flight all game in a match winning display.

4.  Thomas Motlop, in his first game for us, gave a display of football knowhow.  Five goals, plenty of possessions, very good in the air, and very dangerous around the goals.  He will get better as he settles into our play.  Another match winner.

5.  Ben Itzkovich with his run, ball gathering ability and good disposal, complimented Ware's ruck work and Itzy's work rate doesn't diminish over a game.  Takes a fair bit of pounding as well.

In a very good team effort many others could be included.  Perhaps unlucky not to be in the top five:  Robbie Brauer again with an all running game, Ryan Medhust on the other wing put us in many times.  Scott Jacobsen kicked a couple with the second being a team lifter.  Greg Kells dashed out of defence and Tyson Jacquier added another scalp.  Darren Ueding goes a bit unnoticed sometimes but racks up possession after possession.  Shawn Anderson demonstrated how good a full forward he is slotting three in the final quarter to see us home.  A mention to Joel Pettersson and Brett Gooley.  Due to two late withdrawals they played a full B Grade game and then came up to the A's.  Joel took a couple of good grabs while Gools went to Kells' tall man - letting Kells do a couple of runs.  Scott Hadnum played with dash and flare.  Shaun Jacobsen had perhaps the biggest job and while Shaun didn't dominate he kept his man quiet.

A good team effort.
