Match Report:

A well attended game.  Much talk during the week of recruit, Thomas Motlop and his outstanding debut, had Port Magpie "spies" out and about.  Tim Ginever and former Rosewater Junior, and Port Adelaide star, Rod Burton, were interested on-lookers.  Add to the crowd, Member for Cheltenham, Minister, and Rosewater No 1 Ticket Holder, Hon. Jay Weatherill, the crowd was expecting a good contest.

Hope Valley came to play.  Sitting one game behind us, and victorious over us, last game, the outcome of this game would affect their season.  Perhaps more than ours.  The Rosewater Bulldog would sit comfortably in the five, with a win, and perhaps very uncomfortably, with a loss.

The result was very good.  We came out with a great team effort over a very good opponent.  An 8 goal win is well accepted any day.

We have to thank the whole team for the result.

A committed effort, led by former Best and Fairest, Darren Ueding, with all the backlines, saw us in attack more often than not.  The wind was a concern.  We won the toss and kicked with it.  Our first quarter result of 4.1 to 1.4 had the scene set.  Ueding, Shaun Jacobsen - leading from the front in the backlines, Josh Vines, around the ground, and James Carson, sniping in the forwards, had things going our way.  It was a good opening quarter against a good opponent.

The second quarter was the test.  Hope Valleys quarter with the wind.  Within seconds of the first bounce we had a goal on the board.  Shawn Anderson stood tall at full forward, took the grab, and slotted the goal.  And a couple of minutes later, just to show the first was not a fluke, repeated the process.  Valleys weren't to be denied.  They attacked, but a great tackle by Tyson Jacquier, brought them back to the field, and repelling their attack.  Our defenders were doing very well, turning defence into attack.  And Ueds had his own ball.  Bringing your own ball, with a rule to have a kick every second minute, is the way to go.  Ueds was everywhere.  Taking marks around centre half forward, kicking goals, or clearing from defence, like Chicken Man, (he's everwhere he's everywhere) it was a sight for Rosewater Bulldog eyes!  Our recruits, Thomas Motlop and Richie Watts, also shone.  Both oozed class.  Our game was on song.  Robbie Brauer was at his ball gathering best, Ben Itzkovich was running, and our backlines were repelling.  A sight we have been waiting to see, two games in a row, against good opposition, all season.  Are we the real thing?

The third quarter confirmed we are there.  Brad Horsell, in flight, presented.  Greg Kells dueling (as always) with his opponent, marked and looked strong.  Rhino Medhurst had the distinction of his man, one of their best players - but not today, having a rest on the bench.  But Hope Valley were here to play.  Their game was much the same as ours.  Breaking out of centre and with accurate passing giving the forwards every opportunity, particularly with the man running past the pack.  Valleys difficulty was the ratio.  We were doing it with a 5 to 3 factor.  Exciting football and particularly good if your team is the 5.  On the day we were the 5.

Going into the last quarter, having regard to our last encounter, when we let Valleys over run us, was the concern.  They did attack.  They looked good.  But twice early their attacks were stymied by match winning marks by Adam Rumbelow.  Great grabs that took the sting out of the opposition.  Into the wind our last quarter bettered Valleys by a goal or so.  Thanks to a very good team effort, capped by some good work by our forwards and running players.  Alex Birch for the second time in the match, at pace, running past the pack, took possession and slotted his second.  In fact his first, in the second quarter, was a stand-out goal.  Shawn Anderson performed the "tap of the year" putting the ball, from a very contested gathering, onto Birch's chest as he ran past at pace.  Both great goals, but perhaps excellent examples of team play.

We ran out very good winners.  A very good result for us given the excellence of the opposition.  It was a very high standard match where all players, of both sides, had an influence.  However on the day we had a significant win!

Best:

1.  Darren Ueding - first second third and fourth best.  Stood out like a beacon.  One wonders why no one stood him.  Perhaps that's another rule when you bring you own footy - no one stands you.  A great game where he dominated play and kicked 3 goals as well!

2. (Should it be 5)  Well no - Robbie Brauer had a great game.  His run and ball gathering had us regularly into attack.  When Valleys challenged late he slotted a "nail in the coffin" goal to cap a great game.

3.  Ryan Medhurst.  Got the job on one of their danger players.  Had the distinction of his opponent moved to the bench. And when the chips where there to be won, in the last quarter, took a gut busting, courageous mark, deflating the opposition. Had the Coach singing his praises very loudly!

4.  James Carson sniped goals early.  Presented all day and came away with three goals.  A very good game where he established himself as a go-to player.

5.  Ben Itzkovich.  Ben runs and runs.  Gets to the contest.  Is the contest.  Turns the game with his ball getting ability.  A great game by a three time Best and Fairest.  Enough said.

Others to do well included Adam Rumbelow - again a possession gathering game, and with his usual steely backbone to his game.  Josh Vines, invigorated from a trip to the Gold Coast, fresh and raring to go, set us on the path early and contributed all game.   Shaun Jacobsen again back into dominating form.  Brad Horsell tackles with gusto, delivers with precision, and generally generals around his area.  Alex Birch, opportunist goals, and also deep in defence.  Shawn Anderson, not only slotted four goals, but gave off, with class, several others.  Thomas Motlop and Richie Watts displayed silky smooth clash.  Motlop suffered an injury just prior to half time, but the duo didn't disappoint.  Others to do well included, Tyson Jaquier,
Greg Kells, and Lance Billett, all in the backlines, and Dave Ellis replaced Russell Ware, another good performer, in the ruck with a good display.  Scott Jacobsen continues to do the hard yards.  In fact our interchange of Ellis, Joel Pettersson - pinch hitting with distinction and Richie Watts, (first game - but destinied to be a major position player), were very good.

A great win, setting us at the finals.
