Match Report:

Round 1  Loss to Brahma Lodge

Our season got under way with an away game versus Brahma Lodge.  The B’s set the scene with a big loss and much was expected of the A’s to set the record straight.  Well our A’s did a bit better but still suffered a huge loss.

Brahma Lodge got out of the blocks on fire and continued all game with a hard and fast brand of football.  We were unable to combat their cohesion and fast play-on brand of football.  We were eclipsed in the centre and while we went into the game with expectations of many fleet-footed players, our pace did not eventuate.  The Tigers were well drilled and played to a game plan which we could not combat.  For the first time in many years our back lines were swamped.  The problem was the dominance of Brahma Lodge around the centre and the turn-over’s which continually occurred.  Our poor disposal, with a couple of exceptions, aided our opposition.

In the first quarter bells were starting to ring.  We only managed 1.2 into the wind while the opposition had 5.4 on the board.  Shane Smith dominated at centre half back but his dominance was lost with the Tigers by-passing or kicking over him.

We opened the second with much more grunt.  The ball was in our forwards for much of the first half of the quarter, but we didn’t get the results we wanted, while Brahma Lodge slipped into their forwards for 2 goals 1.  At half time we were well adrift.

The third quarter saw an avalanche of Tiger goals.  We didn’t trouble the scorer and apart from a couple of players we did not look like bridging the gap.  Compounding our problem was the fact Smith took himself out with a miss-timed tackle and spent much of the quarter on the sidelines.

Our final quarter effort was our best.  But we were still outscored.  A highlight was the mark by Chris Forster, running with the flight, and marking right in front.  He then converted in a great individual effort!

Best Players:  1.  Josh Searle in a good first up effort.  Plenty of possessions and looked the goods.  2.  Chris Forster was in the thick of things and had some telling possessions.  3.  Shane Smith was outstanding at centre half back.  Many powerful marks and clearing kicks.  4.  Dav Ellis battled against the odds in ruck and acquitted himself well.  5.  Josh Vines ran hard all day but did not have enough support.
