Match Report:
Matches with Blackfriars OS are taking on special event status. In the couple of years since Blackfriars OS have established themselves in the competition, Rosewater and Blackfriars have met on several occasions. The margin has always been tight, rotating between the clubs, and to about one goal difference. Great contests and Saturday's match was no exception.
In front of a very good and vocal crowd, for both clubs, the match opened in scintillating form. Fast and hard, with both teams playing a running brand of football, with plenty of pressure, Blackfriars were into attack first up. Blackfriars' Sam Horsell was an early target and with good hands he was proving a problem for our defenders. One goal was on the board early and the ball was in our backlines. Close and hard with plenty of pressure causing many scrimmages, and then the fleet footed breaking out and thrusting forward. Shaun Jacobsen was prominent at centre half forward, but we were not getting a result from his dominance. Our first goal, to the western end, was to Ben Warren after a strong mark in front of the pack. We were on the board!
Dav Ellis was the dominant big man. He was setting us up with his taps in the centre and general field play. He had a great day in the air and with quick hands was giving off to the running brigade.
We were looking good and then we fell away. Blackfriars OS went up a gear and a further goal to Horsell had them in front. Ben Warren and Shaun Jac righted the ship with a timely goals, but a free in our defence saw Blackfriars slot another and go in at the first break a few points up.
We had a good opening quarter but were outscored.
The second quarter opened with Blackfriars OS into attack. Scott Jacobsen was desperate in the back pocket. Desperation resulted in rushed points. Robbie Brauer, in his first appearance in the A's this season was gathering possessions, and with Josh Searle, was providing us with a lot of run. Adam Rumbelow at about centre half forward slotted our first for the quarter. This kicked 'friars into action and they were into attack. Blackfriar's Horsell kicked a couple more and Brad Hillman also chipped in for his second of the match. A further goal to Rumbelow kept us in the game.
At half time we were down by 3 goals and 'friars looked to be in control. We were still competing and had a bevy of good players. Chris Forster was continuing his good form of the first game, while Aussie Armsden, Josh Vines, and Brenton Love were seeing a lot of the ball. Shane Smith was establishing centre half back as a strong point for us. And Dav continued to dominate.
Shaun Glacken must have given a pretty good rev-up at half time as we came out firing. But the ball was in our back lines but our pressure was negating 'friar goals. We had gone up a cog in the pressure stakes and this pressure turned what were goals into points and misses. Darren Ueding into attack and against the play, raised a full pointer. Into attack again and Shawn Anderson took a screamer. For the first time in the game the ball stuck. A goal resulted. A bit of see-saw and again Ando was in the clouds with another mark and goal.
This proved to be a turning point. We got on top. Brauer spoiled and turned the ball over to our advantage and with a great passage of play Shaun Jacobsen brought up his second.
We put on 5 goals for the quarter and restricted 'friars to 1. A lot of hard work, particularly in the backlines, with Tyson Jacquier and Ryan Medhurst under notice with good clearing dash. It was a very good quarter for us. Going into the final break we were 1 point down, and were to come home to the scoring end.
The final quarter was one of intense football. Pressure on pressure as both sides squared off to produce a win. We opened the scoring with a rushed point. All level. Then "Ando" took another pack mark and slotted a goal. We were up but Blackfriars were still coming. They scored full points and the game was right in the balance. Darren Ueding executed some heavy work and some breathing space was given when Rumbles brouhgt up his third. Shane Smith was gaining stature and repelling and with our runners we were getting on top. Searle sped in for full points and Ando brought up his forth with a great snap. 'friars Matt Belton broke out of centre but only raised one flag. It was still in the balance when a good mark to Tyson Jacquier stopped an attack and the desperation of 'friars dissipated with the rebuff. A further goal to Rumbles and the game was ours.
Best Players: 1. Dav Ellis was best on ground. A dominating display of ruck work, coupled with some good defensive play dropping back to assist in the backlines, with good ground work tackling and slick handball. 2. Robbie Brauer returned and hunted and gathered all day. Spoils opposition players consistently and runs off with the ball. Many touches. 3. Adam Rumbelow played out of a forward pocket and up to the centre - running to full back to kick out and then back. A Captain's game of direction with 4 goals thrown in for good measure. 4. Aussie Armsden around the centre did a lot of hard work. Gets the ball, creates the position, and breaks the lines. 5. Josh Searle continued his all running game. A great first up game last week followed by a further classy exhibition.
All played well.
Too many to mention. Those mentioned by the Club were very good and those not mentioned either in the Club's or the best identified above, can count themselves unlucky.
