Match Report:
In the end a fairly big loss. Well more than fairly big - a big loss! However the game was still in the balance, in the middle of the last quarter, as we were attacking and a couple of goals astray, when a poor goal umpiring decision went against us, and the game changed. We didn't respond, but focussed on the decision, while Hope Valley, confidence up and away they went.
We had been chasing for most of the day. Losing the toss we kicked into the wind. It was tough going. In the opening quarter the Valleys got under way with a seven goal quarter. We were left behind.
The second quarter and our turn with the breeze, and while we slotted four, we let Valleys in for two. Dav Ellis was getting first use of the ball in the ruck, but we were having trouble converting this advantage. Robbie Brauer was prominent, with Shaun Jacobsen a focal point at centre half forward. Aussie Armsden and Brenton Love were getting touches but we could not set up any decisive forward pressure.
Joel Pettersson had been introduced to the defence and blanketed one of Hope Valleys strong points. He continued to repel with distinction. But the flow of the game was with the Valleys.
Our third quarter saw our pressure increase. While we only slotted one full pointer we restricted Valleys to two goals and a number of points. At the last break, given the wind advantage we would have in the final quarter, we had the margin to an achievable one.
It was not to be. We challenged, closed the gap, but when the decision went against us, we did not rally as was required in the circumstances. Valleys ran out on top.
Best. 1. Shane Smith continues to have a telling influence at centre half back. A solid reliable defender. 2. Brenton Love, on the ball had many possessions and fed the ball forward. 3. Dav Ellis again led the taps in ruck. Good around the ground. 4. Joel Pettersson stemmed the influence of a Hope Valley hot spot. Defended well all day. 5. Adam Rumbelow gives all, kicked a couple, and got better as the game wore on.
Other to do well included Robbie Brauer, Aussie Armsden, John Barbis - given a job and did this exceptionally well, and Scott and Shaun Jacobsen. Scott hard all day and Shaun good in the air, particularly in the first half. Chris Forster also came under notice. And Daniel Reardon, off the bench, did not have much game time, but while on the ground did many things with aplomb.
