Match Report:
A big home win. We have accounted for Plympton at home regularly. They return the favour when it is their turn to host. Going into the game Plympton were sitting on the top of the table while we had one from three. A gritty team effort had us run out the victors in what was a very good game.
We opened to the east with the assistance of what wind there was. Perhaps 2 goals.
We were into attack pretty quickly with Shaun Jacobsen laying a good tackle and getting the reward. A pass to Darren Ueding, in his 150th A Grade game for the Club, when he in turn gave to Shawn Anderson, and our first was registered. The pressure continued and Josh Searle brought up our second. This was the way of the game. We were in control, with Plympton responding.
Up 5 points at the first break the "moment of truth" would be the second quarter.
We weren't let down. The pressure was intense. Plympton had a couple of "runners" who were giving us some curry. They hit the front. We responded with Adam Rumbelow reading the "spilled ball" off the pack, from Shawn Anderson, who was being two teamed, and Rumbles slotted a goal.
At half time we maintained the lead, however it was only 5 points.
We held this lead thanks to a team effort. Our backs were mean. Michael Cichowski was having a "day on" defending with gusto. Joel Pettersson rebounded from the other pocket, while Shane Smith was also dominant at centre half back, and Ben Warren was a "worry" to Plympton's full forward.
The third quarter was crucial to our success. We had to put pressure on the scoreboard. Pressure we did. Plympton were in attack and things were looking desperate. But with Robbie Brauer again in the stats as he fed Ueds for a goal. Things went a bit topsy with Plympton peppering the goals. We righted the ship with a slick hand ball from the captain to Josh Searle running at the big ones, and splitting them. A couple more goals to Plympton and things had to change. A gaol to Brenton Love and then some fearsome pressure by tackle. First Phill Williams laid the tackle of match, followed by one by Ben Warren and a third by Rumbles. Interspersed in this pressure Rumbles put through three goals - all well out and all putting the game in our favour. We ran out the quarter with many good players. Aussie Armsden, Williams, Josh Vines, Dav Ellis, and others in Scotty Jacobsen, Bruno McDonald, and our younger brigade in Chris Forster and John Barbis were all prominent. It was great football at breath taking pace with an emphasis on tackling.
At the final change we well placed but would need things to go our way to retain our advantage.
The final quarter opened with a blitzing goal to Phil Williams. The best of starts. Ueds to Brauer and then to Williams and goal. Great stuff. Plympton were in again for one of their own. Our lead was OK but we wouldn't want them to get a run on. Josh Vines slotted one from well out to give us, as it turned out, just enough leeway to maintain our lead. Plympton attacked right up to the end, and scored three goals, but our lead was too great. A team win by 7 points.
The Rosewater Bulldog was barking!
Best: 1. Dav Ellis again in ruck. And around the ground. Many marks and a lot of pressure, tackling and blocking. Continues to dominate the Best and Fairest. 2. Darren Ueding, in his 150th turned back the clock. Sped all over the ground, made the contest and really gathered many telling possessions. 3. Captain Adam Rumbelow did the things when they needed to be done. Took the big mark, put on the tackle, and kicked the goals to keep us in the game. 4. Michael Cichowski dominated the full back line. His marking and desperate attack on the ball in the best game he has played for the Club. Some had him much higher in the list. 5. "Aussie" Armsden did the bullocking things in the centre, plenty of body pressure and constantly set us forward.
In all, all played well. It was perhaps our best team effort in several years. A great win and apologies to all not mentioned in the best players (and that is the entire team!)
