Match Report:
Another day on the road and another loss. When we go down we don't do it in half measures. While Elizabeth's score was very much more than ours, we did challenge in the third quarter. We kicked 5 points on the trot, all shots that may or should have been, goals. After dominating for 15 minutes of the quarter, Elizabeth gathered themselves, forayed into their forward area, and finished off the quarter with 4 goals 1. Our effort of 1 goal 5 was totally eclipsed on the scoreboard but it didn't really represent what happened on the ground.
We opened the game well. Plenty of pace and Brad Horsell, in for his first game of the season, was prominent. Our first came when Hors copped one and the resulting free, to Josh Searle, had our first on the board.
Elizabeth responded. They ran the centre corridor, plenty of pace and back-up, coupled with precise disposal. There was an avalanche of goals. Shane Smith and Ben Warren were standouts in defence but the number of attacks was overwhelming. To make matters worse Dav Baumann was off with an injury. By the end of the quarter one was wondering if the horse had bolted.
Darren Ueding and Josh Vines raised their tempo in the second. But we were still chasing. We were getting the ball forward but the Eagle defence withheld. Our second quarter was better than our first but we weren't able to attack with any authority. At half time we were well down and things weren't looking good. Phil Williams and Bruno O'Loughlin were active while Josh Searle and Brenton Love were also under notice. But we weren't kicking enough goals.
The third quarter could have turned the game our way. We attacked but were very much astray. 1 goal 5 points was a very poor return - but we had the ball almost entirely in our half for the first 15 minutes of the quarter. Then Elizabeth rebounded, against the run of play, and kicked four goals 1. Accuracy, or our lack of it, exposed us. Josh Vines had raised his rate and Robbie Brauer was active. But we were very much behind at three quarter time.
The final quarter was a shoot-out. Weather conditions became calm. Adam Rumbelow went to full forward and we did get a run-on. We slotted 6.4 for the quarter, more than doubling our three quarter score. But Elizabeth also peppered their goals, with a 6.3 return.
In all it was a disappointing result. We are better than what the result indicated. We had enough play to have been much closer than the final result indicates.
Best: 1. Josh Searle, a running game breaking into the forwards, and chasing into the backlines. 2. Josh Vines with a very good exhibition and three goals, a class display. 3. Shane Smith at centre half back was outstanding as was 4. Ben Warren at full back - but both were swamped by the constant attacks of the opposition. 5. Brad Horsell returned with a possession gathering exhibition out of the centre. Others to come under notice were Phil Wiiliams (could be in the list above), Dav Ellis, Bruno O'Loughlin, Darren Ueding and Brenton Love. Congratulations to Ryan Medhurst on his 100th. Also under notice in the backlines. Reegan Mastrangelo played his first A Grade game for us and also had touches.
