Match Report:
Plenty to play for and we came up very short. Driving rain and gale force winds, west to east. We won the toss and kicked with the tide! But we did not capitalise. In what was a 6 or 7 goal wind, in the first quarter, we could only manage two! And it didn't look as if we would get them until Adam Rumbelow slipped down from the half back flank, took a mark and given a pretty soft free and 25 metres, but then kicked straight. Scott Jacobsen opened like his life depended upon winning the ball, and with Aussie Armsden and Josh Vines we were getting possessions - but not enough. When we did get them our disposal was not up to the pressure of Smithfield. In all it was a poor quarter in poor conditions.
The second quarter had us under real pressure. Smithfield with the wind were constantly into attack. some very good defensive work by Rumbles, Scott Jacobsen, Tyson Jacquier and Brad Horsell kept the score from a "blow-out" situation, but the writing was on the wall! Smithfield had too many winners. They had mobile talls and a lot of small runners who were cutting us to bits. But at half time we were still in it.
The third quarter was a shocker. Into the gale, Smithfield rattled on 4.3 to our 2.1. Rumbelow, Josh Vines and Shane Smith were our only winners for the quarter. We continued to fumble and make turn-overs the rule of the day. "Aussie" Armsden was nearly pushed into China and got a free right in front and converted, while Shaun Jacobsen took a good mark and slotted one from reasonably well out. Overall the quarter we needed to win turned to one we lost, and duly this made any attempt to win in the final quarter, into the gale, very academic.
And this is how it turned out. We changed our team to have power points in the forwards. Smith to centre half forward and Rumbelow around the goals. Both slotted one each, but it was always going to be extremely difficult. In the end, in the wind and the rain, it was a disappointing game.
Best: 1. Adam Rumbelow, off the half back, was our best with a committed game, both in defence and attack. Can't be at both ends at the same time. 2. Brad Horsell had many possessions in the centre and was good with disposal. 3. Scott Jacobsen was very good in the first quarter and continued to perform all day. Desperate for the ball. 4. Josh Vines gathered many possessions. Let down a bit by poor hand disposal. 5. Tyson Jacquier on a half back flank under constant pressure, but defended well. Others to do well included "Aussie" Armsden around the ground (and in it on one occasion), Brenton Love, possessions, and Reegan Mastrangelo had a job to do and was committed to blanketing an opponent strong point. Shane Smith had moments.
This loss makes the coming game against Adelaide Lutheran a must win.
