Match Report:
Rosewater 11.15 (81) Smithfield 4.3 (27)
Our B Grade registered their first win of the season. In trying conditions, but nothing like the A Grade encountered, we were off to a good start by winning the toss. We kicked with the strong wind and got on top early. Smithfield have been suffering like us. Low in the Premiership Table with difficulties with B Grade numbers. This game they didn’t have the required number and played a couple short. Obviously this was to our advantage. Coupled with the wind, the extra players we had available, we ran the game out better. We were fairly consistent throughout the game, scoring into the breeze, but really capitalizing when we had it. We set the scene in the first quarter and rattled on 4.4 while our back lines were very tight, not letting Smithfield penetrate past our half back line. The test would be the second quarter. Could we contain the expected “tide to the east”? In fact we played well and restricted Smithfield to 2 goals straight, while adding 4.4 ourselves. Dave McDonald was a target at full forward while Kym Rasheed was very dangerous around the goals. John Murray was making a nuisance of himself as well, setting up opportunities. But perhaps our best work was being done in the back lines. Jamie Corrie and Matt Kooyman were standouts in the back lines. The third quarter had us in attack for much of the quarter. Again we held Smithfield scoreless. In the final quarter we attacked early but then took the foot off, letting Smithfield in for their best scoring quarter (2.3 against the wind!). A good win with a good team effort.
B Grade: Best: 1. Shane Hollitt was in the centre and gave a display of precise disposal in adverse conditions. A class display. 2. Kym Wills dominated in the forwards, marking and gathering possessions. 3. Kym Rasheed was dangerous around the ground and goals all day.
4. John Murray continues with an active interest in getting the ball. 5. Jamie Corrie made full back a “no-go zone” for opposition forward thrusts. There were many other contributors. Ashley Anspach, Dave McDonald, Mat Kooyman, Kelton Young, Rhett Quinliven, Miles DeBlasio, all were very much to the fore.
Goals: Kym Rasheed 4, Dave McDonald 3, Kym Wills 3, with a single to John Murray.
