Match Report:
We lost a game where we were right in it until the half way mark of the last quarter. The 30 point loss was not a reflection of the game, and flattered Brahma Lodge a bit. They were a good side with plenty of height and strength. We attacked in the last quarter, were off target, and Brahma Lodge responded and rattled on 4 goals to settle the matter.
We won the toss and opened to the east. In light rain and a breeze at our backs we got off to a good start, other than we could not put a score on the board. Ashley Matz looked dangerous and he slotted our first. This was followed by a considerable amount of play where the back lines of each side were on top. Brad Horsell was prominent in the centre and "Bruno" McLoughlin was having a real day on. When Adam Rumbelow received a free, and then the benefit of 25 metres, he slotted our second for the game. But this was not a fair reflection of the dominance we had. Matz looked dangerous and with Dav Baumann getting touches, Josh Vines, "Aussie" Armsden, all contributing we were looking good. But the score wasn't on the board.
Lodge's turn with the conditions. They were straight into attack but too only raised a couple of points. Darren Ueding raised our first (for the quarter) - after a good passage of play again with Matz in the thick of it. A little later Cohen Mattner, on his return, raised his first score - a point. Our back lines were rebounding. The half back line of Adam Rumbelow, Shaun Jacobsen and Tyson Jacquier were on top, while Scott Jacobsen was completely blanketing the Lodge's alternate go-to in Danny Hickey. Robbie Brauer was introduced and had immediate impact as a ball magnet.
The third quarter and the conditions were getting worse. We had to get away to a good start however Lodge attacked and put on two goals in the first two minutes. The game became a real scramble with conditions making good football difficult. Lodge had a third goal on the board before Ueds registered a point and then a good mark in the square had Mattner posting a goal. But it was a poor quarter where we let them in early and then could not respond.
We did get into the act in the first half of the final quarter. There was a sense of urgency about our game and Matz slotted his second. Then two points, which with an ounce of luck, may have been goals, had us in touch but oh so far away. We were in it.
However Brahma Lodge responded. They ploughed the ball forward and rattled on 3.2 to run out winners by five goals. A margin, which on the play of the game, was very flattering to them.
Best: 1. Brad Horsell was dominant in the centre. Plenty of attack on the ball, many possessions and good disposal. 2. Adam Rumbelow across the half back line and sometimes into the forwards was outstanding. Marking and disposal were very top class. 3. Josh Vines was all run with possessions and put himself in the game. 4. Shaun Jacobsen took to centre half back as if he had played there all his career - stood out. 5. Tyson Jacquier was very good also off the half back line. Others to do well included Scott Jacobsen - blanketed BL's alternate go-to, Shane Smith was very good at full back, while Dav Baumann, Robbie Brauer, Ashley Matz, and Darren Ueding, all were prominent. New comer in Peter Kavanagh showed plenty of speed and Cohen Mattner was a pleasing return.
