Match Report:
A big win away and on a ground we have encountered problems with in the past. A season defining win. One where relegation for us has been put to the test and averted. Now we can approach the rest of the season with finals as a priority.
The oval had a pool of water on the cricket pitch and spots on the surface were soft. This gives Blackfriars OS an advantage in that they train on it and know it's traits. But it was much better than last year's surface.
It was Adam Rumbelow's 200th senior game for Rosewater. 198 in the A's and 2 in the B's. And he won the toss.
We opened with the wind - slight but south to north, perhaps a goal or two.
We did slip and slide and got very dirty in the centre. It would take some time to adjust to the ground. Cohen Mattner in his second return game was at full forward and had an immediate impact. He slotted 2.2 for the quarter but is was overall a poor quarter for us. We didn't make the best of the wind.
Our second quarter was a defensive one but a very good one. We restricted Blackfriars OS to a single goal while we put though 2.3. It was a defensive quarter all round. A lot of the time the game stagnated while it wallowed in the much. scramble on scramble, but we were asserting pressure and
impressing out presence on the game. Highlights of the second quarter were the speed across the ground of Peter Kavanagh and Shawn Andersons mark. Under extreme pressure it was a contested grab which he converted for full points. Ando was in the position of second ruck and looked good in this run-on role.
At half time we were only 11 points ahead but we had had the majority of the play and had more than twice the shots on goal.
It was just a matter of extracting ourselves from the scrambles and getting some cohesion going. Troy Searle gave us some impetus. He ran and made position and returned 2 goals for the third quarter. Mattner also continued to present and he brought up his third and fourth. Brad Horsell had been setting the standard for pressure and ball gathering and he also brought up two for the quarter. Given Dav Baumann and "Aussie" Armsden were revelling in the conditions, getting in and under, while Ashley Matz was elusive around the ground.
Blackfriars OS attacked but were well off line. They registered 1.5 for the quarter and this inaccuracy gave us a commanding lead going into the final quarter.
Coming home Blackfriars OS had the advantage of the breeze. Could they bridge the gap? We were right on target, against the breeze, and registered 5 straight for the quarter. Blackfriars OS put though 3.5 but again were off line while we went further ahead.
In the end we ran out very comfortable winners. We had a very good team effort. We had plenty of support from all players, with all players contributing to the win.
Best: 1. "Aussie" Armsden was in the thick of things all day. Getting possessions and putting us forward, tackling and making things difficult for Blackfriars OS. 2. Brad Horsell likewise. A great game in the centre bog. Some pin point kicking to advantage. 3. Cohen Mattner gave us a target all day and slotted 6. A very good effort. 4. Shaun Jacobsen rebounded from centre half back and shut out the direct route to goal. 5. Tyson Jacquier was just as effective off his back flank. We had many other winners. Joel Pettersson rebounded from the back pocket. Dav Baumann got on top in ruck and bulldozed his way around the ground. Ashley Matz and Peter Cavanagh were the opposite, fleet of foot and evasive. James O'Loughlin fills in in different spots each week and gave a good account. While Josh Searle and Shawn Anderson were there when we needed them. Shane Smith at full back had some moments too. All in all it was a very good team effort with all contributing. The only down side was the serious injury to Gareth MacLeod. Injured in the first couple of minutes he has suffered three fractures to his hand and was operated on, on Sunday. It may be his season is over. This is a blow as his opening games have seen him an outstanding player.
