Match Report:
Poor conditions and a poor result. We were beaten by a very quick side, a game where we let them get away in the first, kicked poorly in the second, held them goalless in the third, and then let them back in again in the last!
We were right in it, but on the day, Plympton had the edge.
We opened slowly. Plympton had four on the board before Cohen Mattner received from a driving pass out of centre by Josh Vines - and we posted our first goal. We had been in a couple of times before but only points came up. Our back lines were under extreme pressure. Ryan Medhurst was under notice as he consistently kept Plympton out. Then Darren Ueding found Mattner for his, Mattners, second. At the conclusion of the quarter, one where we had had a lot of the play, but were behind on the scoreboard by a fair margin.
Our second quarter and we were on top. But we were off target. This would come back to bite us. 2.5 was a poor return for our efforts. Tyson Jacquier led from the front, moved to half forward, and Robbie Brauer found him with a good pass. Jacquier raised both flags. While we peppered the goals Plympton's pace was a real concern. Their runners were very slick. We also had many good players and the game was well balanced in play, but we were adrift on the scoreboard, due to inaccuracy.
The third quarter was a desperate one. Our back lines smothered Plympton attacks and our centre and on-ball players shut down Plympton's hot spots. Jacquier was good, as were Scott and Shaun Jacobsen, Shawn Anderson presented at centre half forward, while Brad Horsell was in the thick of things. Vines and Adam Rumbelow were also under notice. Ashley Matz had a couple of spectacular runs and registered one goal. It was a good quarter for us and our defensive effort contained Plympton to four points. We had done the hard work and going to the scoring end in the last quarter things favoured us to take out the match.
This outcome didn't come to fruition. Plympton streaked away from the first three centre bounces and registered goals. We were very disappointing having got to the three quarter time position. We kept the pressure on and with late goals to Peter Kavanagh and Ueding we ran out 23 points short.
It was a game which had we won would have put us right on track for a finals berth.
Best: 1. Josh Vines ran all game. Collected many possessions and put them to advantage. A top effort. 2. Dav Baumann carried our ruck effort against taller opponents and won out on the day. Good around the ground. 3. Shaun Jacobsen continues to have the wood on their best player. While he did score three goals Shaun's effort was outstanding. 4. Tyson Jacquier was strong off the half back line, went forward and got us back into the game with a great goal. 5. Ryan Medhurst was a standout in the backlines with many re-bounds. Others to do well included Robbie Brauer on a wing, Adam Rumbelow around the ground, as was Scott Jacobsen - very hard at the ball. Brenton Love and Josh Searle were under notice. In all we had a good team effort but in the end a couple of Plympton's speed men, and perhaps, a better understanding of the ground conditions (wet and slippery with soft patches) gave them the benefit enabling their win.
