Match Report:
A very good win soured by the serious leg injury, both lower bones broken, to Deputy Vice Captain, Ryan Medhurst.
We opened to the eastern end. Favoured with a couple of goals of wind. We opened very fast. What many would have thought to be our weakness, that is speed, turned out to be our strength. We blitzed the Eagles with a pacy opening quarter and a very mean back lines and players sacrificing their game to contain Eagles "Hot Spots". Brad Horsell was left unchecked and with both sides kicking to him he had a field day. Dav Baumann was equal to, or better than, their ruckman and beat him solidly around the ground. With our speedsters all very mobile, Chris Forster, Ashley Matz, Josh Vines and Josh Searle, and the backlines rebounding, we kept them to one shot on goal - and that was only a point. Joel Pettersson, Shaun Jacobsen and Shane Smith were more than equal to the task. Ashley Matz (2 goals) was elusive and with Cohen Mattner and Daniel Reardon each contributing one, we slotted four goals for the quarter. The quarter set the scene for the game.
The second quarter opened with a good pass from Peter Kavanagh to Matz and we had a further goal quickly registered. The Eagles now had the advantage of the breeze and a big effort was required to maintain our dominance. Centre half back, Shaun Jacobsen was dominant in the air and with all our players contributing it was not until the 9 minute mark of the quarter that Elizabeth registered their first major. They did get a run-on but our pressure saw them very inaccurate. And we attacked. Josh Searle, running with the ball took the mark of the game, running to the same spot as the Elizabeth full back, (a big man who put in a couple of short steps), resulted in a gutsy grab. This typified our commitment and this pressure had us well on top. Searle bobbed up shortly later with a pass to Daniel Reardon who in turn marked and put through our second with the quarter.
At the 20 minute mark of the quarter Ryan Medhurst was dashing out of defence, and running across the centre square area, when in the final stages of kicking the ball forward, an Elizabeth player, in attempting to smother fell across his leg. The collision resulted in Ryan suffering a badly broken leg. One in which both bones were broken. Play was then stopped for 20 minutes while an ambulance attended, on the ground, and treated Ryan prior to moving him to hospital. (See the Web Site/News for further details). Play resumed but we held sway, going into half time with a commanding lead.
The third quarter and the pressure continued. All players were totally focussed on winning the football. When Horsell was felled after disposing of the ball, the resulting free to Mattner saw us raise our first full pointer for the second half. We were too fast. Elizabeth were trying to get back into the game but were not able to break our strangle hold. They went into attack twice and registered a couple of goals, while Matz, Kavanagh and Mattner all brought up full points. We ran out a good quarter, but Elizabeth had come back a bit. Would the wind advantage and a renewed endeavour be enough to bridge the gap.
The final quarter, on the board, was Elizabeths best quarter. They outscored us by two goals, and these were very late in the game when perhaps for the first time we relaxed a little (and a very soft free giving them one). Our back lines were still hard it with Tyson Jacquier dashing and Dav Baumann laying a couple of great tackles just to keep them honest.
It was a big win. Elizabeth would have been the favoured team, and by a good margin. It was a win where we had all players focussed and playing attacking pressure football. Perhaps our best game of the season.
Best: All played well - and as all did do well in selecting best players will take the easy way out and comment only on those selected by the Club:
1. Horsell was best on ground. Dominated for three quarters and very good in the third. Both teams seemed to include him in their group - or so it seemed. 2. Darren Ueding moved around the ground collecting possessions. 3. Scott Jacobsen fights for the ball on every occasion. At the bottom of the packs and runs all day. 4. Josh Searle out and about running riot unchecked. Mark of the day as well. 5. Daniel Reardon looked the goods providing a second option to kick to. Knows when to lead and gets in the clear.
And all the other players could have a case made to include them in the 2 - 5 positions (Horsell universally accepted as BOG).
