Match Report:
A good game where most players could vie for best and fairest selection. We lost to top of the table Hectorville on their home ground. A game where we had our chances but could not convert at a couple of crucial stages and we could not maintain the pressure in the last. Hectorville had a taller team and in the conditions, this proved to be a match winner.
We opened very well. Lots of early pressure and endeavour. It was an arm wrestle to establish ascendancy. Dav Baumann was again giving us first use while Robbie Brauer, Aussie Armsden, Josh Vines and Chris Forster were all in the thick of it. Cohen Mattner slotted two and with a third to Brad Horsell we were well placed at quarter time.
The second quarter opened with Ashley Matz taking a magical mark and kicking truly. Bruno O'Loughlin was having an influence, around the half forward line, and with Brauer on-song we were well in it. A highlight was the speed of Peter Kavanagh, giving the opposition a couple of metres, flashing past them, with a good pick up and then capped the play with full points! Scotty Jacobsen and Daniel Reardon were active, while Shane Smith was blanketing their full forward. But Heccies steadied and rattled on a couple of goals without our responding. At half time we were 8 points adrift but were looking good.
The third quarter was a battle of the defences. We registered 1.2 for the quarter, the same result as our opposition. Our backlines had been prominent in the quarter. Adam Rumbelow, Tyson Jacquier and Shaun Jacobsen were very good. In the final quarter we were to the northern end, which was the scoring end. Our prospects were good.
It was not to be. Heccies got a run on and slotted three on the trot. We had the ball forward on a couple of occasions but only Josh Searle was able to register a goal. A single goal for the quarter and we went down by 23 points! A disappointing result as we were right in it. With a couple of taller and fast players to return it may be a different result if we meet again this season.
Best: 1. Dav Baumann again rucked well and was our only tall to be in the forwards. Couldn't be everywhere. Tried to be and nearly succeeded. 2. Aussie Armsden gave us some bite around the ball. 3. Bruno O'Loughlin gets under the guard of the opposition and plays above his height. 4. Josh Vines continues to run. 5. Robbie Brauer again had many possessions. Others to do well.
In fact all played well. Chris Forster was fast and pressured the opposition. The half back line of Tyson Jacquier Shaun Jacobsen and Adam Rumbelow were in control for most of the match while Shane Smith came out well on top at full back. Daniel Reardon dashed out of defence as well. Matz had moments and dazzles the opposition. While Josh Searle was under notice particularly in the final term. Perhaps the highlight performance wise was that of 200 game player in Dave McDonald. Off the bench he played his best game for the club. High marking and dashing, one wonders why he saved the exhibition for 199 games before letting it all out! Mark Baryczka was solid in his 150th for the club. All in all we were right in it but pipped by a couple of taller players.
