Match Report:
A good win in windy conditions against a resurgent North Haven. Always hard to win at Largs North and this match was no different to other recent encounters. With a couple unavailable our team was reorganised. Into the 21 Shane Hollitt came in for his first A Grade for the season. As always didn't disappoint. Vice Captain Tyson Jacquier took over the all important full back role and did a good job on Haven's normal match winner. Dave McDonald maintained his spot in the ruck, after his explosive 200th last round. It didn't last long as in about his first minute on the ground he did his ankle very badly. With Dav Baumann also unable to ruck this left the rucking duties to Bruno O'Loughlin. Bruno raises to every challenge and this match was no exception. But to the game:
We lost the toss and kicked into a very strong wind, north to south. We made a couple of forays forward but it was a quarter of defence. We had lost both ruckmen a few minutes into the quarter. But our defence was very good. We had a lot of players running. Aussie Armsden, Josh Vines, Joel Pettersson were very quick. Our backs led by Adam Rumbelow with desperate spoiling and defensive pressure repelled and put pressure on the North Haven goal kicker. Tyson Jacquier was tight and Shaun and Scott Jacobsen were in the thick of things. It was a quarter where we got into the forwards but we played from behind (forwards) and Haven easily defended.
Into the second quarter and we needed to put some scoreboard pressure on. Cohen Mattner registered our first. Ashley Matz our second (after a good tackle and the resulting fee). And Mattner another. Then 10 minutes into the quarter the wind dropped - not entirely but as things do at Largs North the wind can influence the outcome. Mattner raised another and then Haven attacked and raised three in a row. Matz gained a second free and raised a major. We had had a reasonable quarter but the down side was letting Haven in for three. At half time we were two goals adrift. And would have been more but for the rucking performance of Bruno O'Loughlin. Called on to contest with an opponent with a much better reach Bruno played a lone hand in ruck, and contested on the ground.
We had a problem (the three goals against the wind) and it was fixed by moving Shaun Jacobsen to centre half back. And the wind had returned. He had started there and went to centre half forward with the wind. Now the wind had dissipated Shaun returned to the backlines and his influence on the game from this point onwards was match winning.
Haven were into attack with a couple of shots on goal and they raised their second for the quarter from a very soft free kick. We raised a couple of points and Rumbelow running with the ball marked Haven's kick out and passed to Bruno he brought up our first into the breeze. Mattner raised a second and then Haven were back into scoring mode. The pace around the ground had been very fast. Conditions made accurate passing difficult and the ground surface affected the bounce. But we had responded. With Shaun Jacobsen dominating in defence we were going into the final quarter with
a deficit of four goals. The wind was worth four or five so we were right in it.
We were into attack immediately. But we were only raising points until Darren Ueding kicked truly. Mattner raised a further, interspersed with a points from Daniel Reardon. Shaun Jacobsen passed to Matz and he had another major to his tally. Our run around the ground was getting on top of the opposition. We had fast and desperate palyers with Chris Forster prominent, Brad Horsell quiet early was now gathering and delivering, and Josh Searle started to have an influence. We were running over Haven and they appeared to wilt. It became a possession to our goals. Mattner took a pack mark and number six was on the board. A couple of minutes later and number seven! The game was sealed with a snap from Brenton Love. North Haven made one sortie forward and raised a point. We had raised 18 scores for the quarter - but somewhat inaccurate with only 6 majors. But a very good win.
Best: 1. Shaun Jacobsen mainly at centre half back dominated in the air. Took pack mark after mark and repelled. Must have accumulated over 10 in pack situation - stopping opposition thrusts dead and slipped forward to pass to forwards. A BOG performance. 2. Cohen Mattner raised 7 goals. Led and marked well. Good off the ground. Was a focal point all game. 3. Andrew Armsden provided the gutsy gets. Strong at the ball and got the ball forward. A game putting us into attack and then assisting in defence. 4. James O'Loughlin called on to ruck continuously for most of the game. Against a much taller opponent. Nullified many times and many times took it away himself. Rucks and roves and his strong hands. Really stepped up when we needed him. 5. Adam Rumbelow with another good game. 24 possessions, 8 marks, and a desperate spoiling game in defence. Directed and controlled the game both in defence and outer attack.
Others to do well: Ashley Matz very mobile and dangerous within sixty metres of goal. Josh Vines quick and gathered possessions. Scott Jacobsen was desperate and hard as ever. Many had in the top 5. Chris Forster very fast and defensive is turning into a very good player. Joel Pettersson was perhaps our best in the first quarter. Sat out most of the second - but returned to produce a good game. Dav Baumann, under duress, had many touches around the ground. Trust he comes up next week. Josh Searle, quiet early had a good final quarter. Speed of movement. Tyson Jacquier controlled Leigh Forrest for most of the game. Darren Ueding and Brenton Love both had moments (and kicked goals). Brad Horsell tagged out of game but worked his way back in. Hollitt impressed while Mark Baryczka and Daniel Reardon did everything asked of them. Peter Kavanagh was his usual speedster self - but injured. Likewise with Dave McDonald, done in by the poor oval surface! All in all it was a very good team effort.
