Match Report:

A big win.  Penultimate round of the season and we win our way into the top five for the first time of the season.  Winning at Smithfield, and by a reasonable margin - they had to kick four goals to win - was a very good performance.  A team performance with the result going our way.  Great news!

We won the toss and kecked to the southern end.  Favoured by a breeze of 2 to 3 goals!  we got away to a good start with Ashley Matz, on the ball and on fire.  Dav Baumann again was competitive in ruck and Cohen Mattner was a target at full forward.  Shaun Jacobsen dominated the centre half back position and "Aussie" Arsmden had a lot of possessions.  It was a good quarter of fast and desperate football.  One however, where we were off target, while Smitfield were right on.  They were very quick.  We went to the first break 4 points down after kicking with the wind!

The second quarter and we had to hold.  Smithfield were very quick to the ball and were looking dangerous.  Scott Jacobsen typified our desperation.  But we were right under the pump.  Then a couple of indiscretions and Smithfield had a very handy lead.  Peter Kavanagh entered the fray with some bursting speed.  Slotted two himself and a Scott Jac tackle ended with Darren Ueding kicking truly.  We had redeemed ourselves and went to the half time break, down but not without chances.  We were 15 points adrift!

The second half opened and we had changed our centre set-up.  We had to control Smithfield's Taylor.  We achieved this.  And we really put the skids on their scoring.  With a gritty defence led by Shaun Jac at centre half back and with assistance of Tyson Jacquier and Shane Smith on the last line we contained Smithfield to 1 goal 3 points.   Joel Pettersson had had many possessions and was bursting the line out of defence.  In the meantime, with Matz still dominating around the ground, and Brad Horsell in a forward pocket creating major headaches for the Smithfield defence, we gathered 4.4 for the quarter.   We went to the final break with a 10 point advantage.

You would have to say, with the wind in their favour, the final quarter would see Smithfield home.  But this was not to be.  Admittedly the wind had dropped from about half time, but our final quarter was about as good we have played all year.  Brad Horsell dominated it.  He and Mattner were targets and Horsell became the go-to man.  Smithfield didn't or couldn't match up on him and he slotted three majors, while Mattner and Ueding each added another.  We ran over Smithfield scoring 5.3 to their 2.2.  We had been the more desperate side.  Smith spoiled while Jacquier took the marks that had to be taken.  And in all this Scott Jacobsen really applied the pressure.  This pressure turned the ball over and our runners, in Brenton Love, Matz, Kavanagh, and Pettersson really mopped up.

It was a great win!  A team win.

Best:  1.  Ashley Matz gets the ball, makes space in the tightest packs, and kicks long.  A fast running game.  2.  Scott Jacobsen applied the pressure all day.  wore the opposition down, turning the ball over.  3.  Andrew Armsden with a similar pressure game to Scotty.  His attack on the ball and ability to break out of packs was first rate.  4.  Brenton Love provided a mobile, marking, target from centre to full forward.  5.  Brad Horsell, quiet early, won the game for us in the second half, particularly in the final quarter - 5 goals (in fact six as the goal umpire "missed" one giving it a point.  Wasn't our goal umpire either!

Many other players to contribute including :  Shaun Jacobsen repelling, Dav Baumann - singlehandedly most of game in ruck, Joel Pettersson and Tyson Jacquier pressure out of defence, as did Shane Smith.  Mark Baryczka off the bench did all he was requested to do.  Peter Kavanagh got us back into the game late in the second.  Cohen Mattner always threatened to take the game away.

A very good win putting us into the top five.  Now to make the best of our opportunities.
