Match Report:

We attended the Neil Craig "Goal Kicking Academy" during the week.  Like Taylor Walker, who is on the outer, we were very nearly there as well.  However, Shaun Glacken must have recently played Monopoly and appears to have stolen a "Get Out Of Gaol Free" card.  He played it at three quarter time and we stormed home.  We kicked 8.7 to one goal in the final term and got up by 10 points.  A turn around of mammoth proportions and one the players can give themselves credit for, for not giving the game away.  Entering the final term with 4.13 on the board and chasing 12.6 we didn't look to have a chance.  But never say die - and we didn't.  It was a great win and put us to 4th spot on the Finals Table.

We lost the toss.  Not a good thing to do.  A gale west to east.  In the first our game was very good, except for our accuracy.  1.7 was a very poor return for the effort we expended getting the ball into the forwards.  We were competitive in the centre with Dav Baumann again carrying our ruck.  But it was our defence that held our game together.  Shaun Jacobsen dominated the direct route.  But we were making errors.  Miss kicks and free kicks well within kicking distance had us looking down the barrel.  David Hodges of Adelaide Lutheran must have thought all his birthdays had come at once.  He was in the right spot at the right time, and put through 4 goals in the first quarter.  Our only major was when Cohen Mattner converted after some good work from Scotty Jacobsen and Mark Baryczka.  Lutheran had their tails up and we needed a good second quarter to come back at them.

We had the wind for our first effort with it.  Darren Ueding stepped up and became a power point in the forwards.  Brenton Love was also under notice, as was Joel Pettersson (particularly a snare of the ball causing the umpire some grief).  Lutheran did have their tails up and were scoring into the gale.  And they were accurate, while we were still under the influence of the aforementioned kicking skills class.  Late in the quarter goals to Brad Horsell and Ueding had us in touch at half time - but not looking the goods.

Lutheran really got a wriggle on in the third.  We looked to have run our race.  The season was going down the gurgler.  We were not disciplined.  We gave away two 25 metres and two FAD's - each resulting in a major to the opposition.  In fact we only scored a point while Lutheran registered 5.2.  At three quarter time we were gone for all money.  It is reported Smithfield had an observer at the game and his report had them jubilant with our impending loss (and their elevation to the final five).

We opened the final term needing to kick 6 goals, and restrict Lutheran to no score, to be in front by a single point.  We re-arranged our centre square.  We got control of the square and the ball and started to reduce the deficit.  What started out slowly quickly became an avalanche of goals to us.  Lutheran lost their confidence.  They did attack but were repelled.  Our defence with Tyson Jacquier prominent was too strong.  They registered one goal but we put through 8.9 for the quarter.  Still off target but the weight of our offense was overwhelming.  We ran out winners by 10 points.  And into fourth spot - a home final against Plympton.

Best:  We had quite a few players down.  But we also had a lot of good players.

1.  Darren Ueding really gave a display of marking and presenting in the forwards and slotted three goals.  2.  Dav Baumann contested the ruck and made a contest around the ground.  3.  Brenton Love took a lot of marks and was effective in driving us forward.  4.  Tyson Jacquier drove us out of defence with a power game.  5.  Brad Horsell was very competitive and kicked two gaols at vital times to keep us in the game, and get us home!  Others to play well included Joel Pettersson, strong in air and driving out of defence.  Shaun Jacobsen and Shane Smith both good in the major defensive positions.  Bruno O'Loughlin creative around the ground and spells Dav while giving away a lot of height.  Aussie Armsden another hard tackling game.  It was a very good win!
